Who We Are

We started out as a group of neighbors in the University Hill Farms neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin. While our initial focus was to restore the biodiversity of our own yards, the group quickly evolved. We focus on learning about sustainable practices which do include our yards but so much more. The components of sustainability include building strong community, reconnecting with nature, supporting the environment, producing food, and engaging in local action.

Our Focus

01.
Biodiversity

We want to promote the ecosystems in our neighborhood that support life and restore the vital connections between plants, animals, and humans.

02.
Sustainability

Sustainability is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone now and for generations to come. We can use our properties to support wildlife, retain rainwater, restore healthy soil, grow food, and reserve spaces for play and leisure.

03.
Community

Building community allows us to work together, play together, share resources, and FEEL CONNECTED.
Community doesn’t build itself and it doesn’t happen overnight. But it’s what we need.

So, Let’s get going!

For one family alone to make a rain garden, start a pollinator garden, or learn to grow food, it can be daunting and expensive. But working as a group will make such an endeavor more affordable and much more enjoyable.
Changes of this kind take work, but the rewards are enormous. We can provide each other with inspiration, strategies, and practical support for making and maintaining truly living landscapes. And sharing our efforts helps us to build a stronger community and is an important expression of hope.
So how are we sharing? We can share labor, tools, and expertise. We can participate in learning sessions to educate ourselves and hone our skills. We can come together for social times. We can work together on volunteer efforts outside our neighborhood. So many possibilities! Let’s explore them together
